Workplace Wisdom: Capri Tamilla

Editor’s Note:

This month we sat down virtually with Digital Outreach Manager Capri Tamilla to talk about all things Terakeet, what it’s like growing up in Syracuse, and how she likes to structure her day inside and outside of work! Read the full interview below.

Capri and her family

Q1: What is your role and how long have you worked at Terakeet?

I am currently an Outreach Manager and have worked at Terakeet for 6 ½ years!

Q2: What advice would you give someone who is new to Syracuse or to Terakeet?

Syracuse is a great place to put some roots down! After growing up here I can’t imagine living anywhere else. I think we have such a great balance of city feel and suburban living. There is really something for everyone and every lifestyle here!

Q3: List a quote that has helped you get through a tough time.

I know this may seem kind of simple but the saying “everything happens for a reason” is a saying I have a lot of faith in. When going through a tough time, believing that whatever is happening is happening for some larger reason, gives me much comfort.

Q4: How do you unwind after a long workday/case of the Mondays?

Honestly nothing makes me happier than playing with my son. Building some big tower for him to knock down or bring him to the park, whatever puts a smile on his face, is the best way for me to unwind!

Q5: If you could invite any famous businessperson or workplace guru to dinner, who would it be and why?

I am not sure if this person qualifies for a “famous businessperson”, but they are famous to me LOL! Jennifer Todryk is an Instagram influencer that I have been following for years. I have always been so impressed with all the different successful business ventures she has done. From writing a book, opening up a coffee shop, and now having her own show on HGTV and doing it all so cohesively, I feel like I could learn a lot from her!

Q6: If you could only use 5 workplace tools or platforms, what would they be and why?

Slack: I love being able to stay connected with my team in a fun and interactive way! Slack has been such a great tool at allowing my team to continue to get to know one another without being in the office.

Google Calendar: This is the first thing I look at when I get up in the morning. I love being able to see my whole day, week, and month at a glance.

Zoom: I mean Zoom has also been such a great way to keep up with my team. I missing being in the office and seeing everyone in person, but being able to see their faces in Zoom has been very nice too!

Chorus: This one is a no brainer! My team pretty much does every aspect of their job in Chorus, I would be lost without it!

Notes App: This app has been super handy! Being in a meeting and needing to make a reminder or even jot down some quick notes on a client call, this app is a must for me.

Q7:  What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received from a coworker?

I cannot recall who shared this with me, as it was early on in my career, but it is advice I always share with new team members, “Pick the brains of your coworkers and figure out their workflow, then try it yourself and piece together your own workflow!” Even though my career has evolved from Digital Marketing Specialist to Outreach Manager, this is still something I practice. I love picking the brains of the other Outreach Managers and hearing how they would approach a situation or even how they tackle their day-to-day. There is always something new to learn!
